Have you heard about making your blog sexy? You may question, how can be a blog be sexy… but yeah, there are ways how to make your blog sexy or sexier, not in the sense like you need to visit Washington DC plastic surgery or whatever surgeons that is. What sexy I am talking about is to make your blog different to attract more visitors, fans and lots of readers that keeps on coming back day after day after day. Just like these following blogs like ProBlogger, CopyBlogger, SeoBook, Matt Cutt’s Blog, SeoMOZ and Engadget, I considered them sexy and I am attracted to these blogs that I keep on coming back day after day.
I am sure you too want to have a blog that almost everybody on the online world are reading on your every posts, day by day.
So here’s the 40 Ways To Make Your Blog Sexier article from The Zen of SEO:
Enhance the User Experience
1. Keep your paragraphs short and tight. Paragraphs should never be longer than 4-6 lines. Explain things in the fewest words as possible.
2. Use lists, and bullet-points freely. People rarely read every single word on a site. They scan.
3. Bold important words. Use the h1 and h2 tags to highlight titles and sub-topics within a post.
4. Break up your post into different subsections, instead of one giant glob of text. Use the h1 and h2 tags.
5. White Space is King.
You don’t need to fill the screen with ads or links. There’s nothing more intimidating than seeing a page full of text.
6. Consider using a black font color
It’s amazing how many sites use a gray font color. For some sites, it actually looks better, but most bloggers should stick with black.
Improve Your Design
7. Invest in an unique template
If you’re still using the default Blogger or WordPress template, you can forget about getting massive traffic. When I see such a blog, I won’t even read what you have to say. I just close the window. Please, get a template from somewhere, tweak it, and make it look unique – it ain’t that hard.
8. Include sleek images.
In all of my entries, I include a pic that is related to the topic of my post. Problogger does the same. There are plenty of sites that offer free stock photos. Chopstix.net does a wonderful job of including images to beautify their blog. You should do the same.
9. Put a sexy photos of yourself.
Not sexy? Find a picture of a sexy girl somewhere, and pass that off as you – noone will find out.
Include photos of yourself in weird angles and dark shadows. Why else do you think Michella Malkin’s Blog gets so many hits?
10. Make sure your blog looks sleek and clean in every browser. FireFox, Internet Explorer and Opera are the big 3.
11. Give your blog an Eastern, Zen-like look. (Hint, Hint… )
12. Don’t put Adsense ads everywhere. Keep it low-key. Consider signing up for an affiliate program and putting affiliate links instead. Seeing a bunch of Adsense ads when you first visit a blog is a major turn-off.
13. Brand Your Blog
Your blog needs to be memorable. Give your blog a simple and memorable name. I decided to go with the Zen of SEO because it’s unique, and easy to remember .I also decided to give my blog an Eastern, Zen-like theme to it – it’s something that I have not seen in any SEO blogs. Zen philosophy + SEO advice. The Zen of SEO.
Write Captivating Content
Looks can only go so far. Your site may look sleek and unique, but if you’re not pumping out captivating content regularly, you will never get any regular visitors. Tell us something we don’t know. Give us a startling fact or revelation. Tell us something interesting or intriguing about a mundane aspect of life. Anything can be interesting, even Q-Tips – it just depends on how you spin it!
14. Write Captivating, Descriptive Titles.
Examples include “The HollyWood Way to Business Success”, “5 Simple Ways To Open Your Blog Post With a Bang”, and “How to Overcome Skepticism”. See a pattern here? People love reading Top 10 lists, and How-To articles.
15. Establish an Emotional Connection With Your Readers
The best blogs establish a connection with their readers. A talented blogger is like a close friend, as opposed to a professor.
When you read their posts, it’s like having a conversation with someone who is willing to share their deepest feelings, and secrets. Whereas, reading a boring, dry blog is like listening to a professor give a PowerPoint lecture.
16. Tell Us Your Opinion
Stop linking to articles or telling us about the latest news! The best way to establish an emotional connection with your readers is to tell us your opinion – it doesn’t matter if everyone disagrees or not. Tell us what you thought about Steve Irwin’s Death, instead of saying OMG! He died.
17. Don’t Write Stuff We Already Know
“The best way to get traffic is to get more links, and write more content…” Duh! Everyone and their mom already knows this. Why don’t you stop wasting everyone’s time and tell us something we didn’t know, such as “Many people think the main barrier to online marketing success is a lack of traffic. But it’s really a lack of trust.”
18. Don’t write for search engines.
Write naturally, and make sure you’re passionate about what you’re writing. If you don’t care, guess what? We don’t care as well. If you want to make money blogging, it seems the harder you try, the less successful you will be.
19. Short Posts Are Ok.. but not all the time.
I’m not a strong believer in more is better. If you have nothing enlightening or interesting to blog about, don’t blog at all. Make every post count. Don’t clutter your blog with fluff.
20. Be specific
Don’t just tell us you hate life, or President Bush should be impeached. Give a well-structured, carefully crafted argument on why you hate life, or why Bush should be impeached (You do know that means Cheney will be prez, right? =)
21. Tell Exciting Stories
Human beings love to hear stories, especially enticing ones. Give us all the explicit details. What color was that booger he picked?
22. Show Some Attitude
Make us envy you. Show us your $100,000 Adsense check. Show us pictures of you with a famous porn actress, or Playboy mansion babes.
23. Be pretentious and elitist. Be like the Rich Jerk.
24. Write posts that resonate with your readers. Rant about something that your readers can relate to. Joel Spolsky, of Joel On Software is a master of this. He writes about stuff that almost every software programmer, or even regular people can relate to!
Like his post on how it’s just plain stupid that you have to press the red button to turn a cellphone on. Give your readers a mental orgasm.
25. Pose a philosophical question in the beginning of a blog post that everyone has asked themselves at least once.
26. Write content so well-written, your readers wish they could write as elegantly as you.
27. Be like Joe Frank. For those who don’t know who Joe Frank is, he owns a radio show and puts out all these monologues about private, personal topics noone talks about. Talk about your deepest feelings and don’t be afraid to be embarassed. Your readers will love you for it!
Miscellaneous
28. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Life is full of humor – make fun of stuff. Joke about stereotypes. Joke about Math. Joke about ninjas.
29. Go off-topic once in awhile. Don’t be afraid to open up and talk about your personal life. However, don’t bore us to death (”Work sucked. I need to start working out.. I need more sleep.. blah blah blah”).
30. Post a link to the latest, coolest YouTube video or Flickr picture
31. Claim you’re an employee for Google.
32. Tell us about the cool insider parties that you attended last night.
33. Name your blog posts based on movie titles. Such as “Dorm Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Fart”.
34. Attack another blogger. Find someone you disagree with, and refute him/her. Friendly, constructive criticism is interesting. Just don’t get too ugly and attack him personally. Simply start a debate, outlining your points in a logical manner. Tell us why you disagree.
35. Don’t be politically correct.
36. Establish yourself as a credible, authoritative writer, and make sure your facts are correct. Proof-read, and make sure your writing is formatted properly.
37. Consider posing an insighful question at the end of a blog post to get a dialogue going. You want your comments section to be an active forum.
38. Blog about Paris Hilton.
39. Got a hot girlfriend? Show us a picture with your arms around her. Remember to smirk!
40. Write for yourself.
Forget about making a living off blogging. Many people write a few mediocre posts with nothing interesting to add, and they immediately start telling everyone to visit their blog. Write a good handful of informative, unique, enlightening posts, and then tell us about it. Write to satisfy yourself. Write to improve your writing.
